Wizards of the Coast Announces Major Changes to Magic: The Gathering Boosters

Starting in 2027, new God Packs and updated card distributions aim to heighten excitement for players

Category: Arts & Culture

Wizards of the Coast has unveiled a comprehensive overhaul of its Magic: The Gathering booster packs, set to take effect in 2027 with the launch of the new set, Nauctis: The Sunken Realms. The changes, which will extend into 2028 and beyond, include the introduction of God Packs and a re-evaluation of card distributions within both Play Boosters and Collector Boosters.

The company’s latest announcement revolves around enhancing the excitement of opening booster packs, a sentiment that resonates deeply with players. Starting with the new set, players can expect a more thrilling experience that reflects what they truly enjoy about the game. According to Wizards of the Coast, the goal is to make every booster pack feel exciting and meaningful, ensuring players are eager to open each one.

Key facts

  • God Packs will appear in 1 in 1,000 Play Boosters and 1 in 300 Collector Boosters.
  • Play Boosters will now be simply called Booster Packs.
  • Foil common and uncommon cards will be removed from Booster Packs.
  • Japan Showcase cards will now be available in Booster Packs.

Among the most notable changes is the introduction of God Packs, which will be available in every Magic Multiverse set starting with Nauctis: The Sunken Realms. A God Pack is a special booster that guarantees every nonbasic card inside is a rare or mythic rare. For Play Boosters, the God Pack will contain 14 rare or mythic rare cards, including:

  • 1 God Pack celebration card
  • 10 non-foil rare/mythic cards
  • 2 non-foil Booster Fun rare/mythic cards
  • 2 traditional foil Booster Fun rare/mythic cards

For Collector Boosters, the God Packs will be even more exclusive, appearing at a rate of 1 in every 300 packs. These will include:

  • 1 God Pack celebration card
  • 1 foil land
  • 3 foil default frame rare/mythic cards
  • 3 non-foil Booster Fun rare/mythic cards
  • 5 foil Booster Fun rare/mythic cards

Wizards of the Coast has emphasized that these changes will not come with an increase in prices, maintaining the current MSRP. This commitment to affordability aims to alleviate any concerns players may have about the financial implications of these new features.

The content changes

In addition to the introduction of God Packs, Wizards of the Coast is making several adjustments to the contents of both Play Boosters and Collector Boosters. Notably, foil common and uncommon cards will no longer be included in Booster Packs, a decision based on player feedback indicating that these cards have lost their appeal. Instead, when players do find a foil card in a Booster Pack, it will now be a rare or mythic rare card, as the drop rates for these higher-value cards have been increased.

Collector Boosters will also see a reduction in the number of foil cards, losing two common and one uncommon card from their slots. This change aims to streamline the opening experience, as many players tend to skip over these lower-tier cards during unboxing videos. As a result, the Collector Boosters will feature fewer cards but will focus on providing a more premium experience for collectors.

In a move to expand the availability of desirable cards, the Japan Showcase cards, which were previously exclusive to Collector Boosters, will now be obtainable in Booster Packs. These visually stunning cards can now appear in the wildcard slot of a Booster Pack, adding another layer of excitement for players.

What's next

Wizards of the Coast is aware that these changes may prompt questions from the community, and they have set up a dedicated space on their Discord server for players to discuss the updates. This engagement is part of their broader strategy to maintain transparency and keep the player base informed and involved.

As the Magic community anticipates the arrival of Nauctis: The Sunken Realms, excitement is building around the prospect of opening God Packs and the enhanced drop rates for foil rare and mythic rare cards. The upcoming changes represent a shift in how booster packs are perceived, aiming to create memorable experiences with each opening.

These updates also signify a broader trend in the collectible card game industry, where companies are increasingly focused on player feedback to refine their products. By eliminating less popular elements and introducing more sought-after features, Wizards of the Coast is positioning itself to meet the demands of a dynamic market.

The changes to Magic: The Gathering boosters are set to roll out with the release of Nauctis: The Sunken Realms in early 2027, with subsequent sets following suit. Players and collectors alike will follow closely closely to see how these adjustments impact their gameplay and collecting experiences.
