On August 25, 2026, the Trust for the National Mall announced a generous $1 million donation from TD Bank U.S. to support the preservation and educational programming at the historic Lockkeeper's House. This announcement coincided with the 110th anniversary of the National Park Service (NPS) and is part of the Trust's campaign, "Our Monumental Moment," honoring America’s 250th anniversary.
The Lockkeeper's House, built in 1837, is the oldest constructed building on the National Mall, which attracts over 36 million visitors annually. The donation will enable the Trust to expand educational opportunities and programs at the Lockkeeper's House, which serves as a mini museum featuring immersive video and educational exhibits about the history of the National Mall.
"At TD, we are honored to support the Trust and its mission to enrich and preserve one of our country's most beloved treasures: the National Mall," said Leo Salom, President & CEO of TD Bank U.S. "This $1 million contribution to preserve the Lockkeeper's House reflects our bank's enduring commitment to the United States and the communities we serve. As we celebrate America's 250th anniversary, we are proud to help care for the oldest building on the National Mall — a centerpiece of early American commerce — and create new opportunities for visitors to learn about its unique role in the American story."
The National Park Service, founded in 1916, has played a key role in preserving America's natural and cultural heritage. Its 110th anniversary is marked by various initiatives aimed at enhancing public engagement and education about national parks. The Lockkeeper's House, which originally stood at the intersection of the former Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and the Washington Canal, was relocated in 2018 after a complete restoration, thanks to the Trust for the National Mall and its supporters.
The Trust for the National Mall acts as the nonprofit philanthropic partner of the NPS, dedicated to restoring, enriching, and preserving the National Mall and President's Park, including the White House grounds. Through private philanthropy and strategic partnerships, the Trust aims to steward some of America's most iconic public spaces, monuments, memorials, landscapes, and historic sites.
As part of its broader initiative, the Trust's "Our Monumental Moment" campaign is focused on raising funds for various restoration projects, including the 56 Signers of the Declaration of Independence Memorial and Constitution Gardens. The campaign aims to restore physical structures and to expand digital education platforms and volunteer programs to engage visitors.
With the $1 million donation from TD Bank, the Trust for the National Mall plans to implement several educational programs at the Lockkeeper's House. This includes support for the Volunteers in Parks (V.I.P.) program, which helps maintain the nearly 200-year-old structure and provides staffing for the site. The funding will also assist in developing new educational materials and outreach efforts to connect visitors with the historical significance of the Lockkeeper's House.
As the National Park Service celebrates its 110th anniversary, it is also offering free admission to national parks across the country, encouraging more visitors to experience these national treasures. This initiative aligns with the broader goal of fostering a greater appreciation for America's natural and cultural heritage as the nation prepares for its 250th anniversary in 2026.
In light of these developments, the Trust for the National Mall continues to seek additional support and partnerships to advance its mission. Catherine Townsend, President & CEO of the Trust, emphasized the importance of private philanthropy in preserving national treasures, stating, "TD’s investment in the Lockkeeper’s House is an investment in the stories that connect us to our nation’s past. This historic landmark stands at the heart of America’s Front Yard, and thanks to TD’s partnership, we can preserve and share its rich history with the millions of visitors who come to the National Mall each year."
The Trust for the National Mall, with the assistance of TD Bank, is committed to ensuring that the National Mall remains a vibrant and inspiring destination for future generations. As the campaign progresses, the Trust aims to create a lasting impact on both the physical space and the educational programming available to visitors.
