Carmarthen comedian Rhod Gilbert is set to make his much-anticipated return to UK television with a new comedy series titled Wagging Rights. This marks his first TV appearance since receiving the all-clear from cancer earlier in 2023.

Gilbert has been on an extensive 180-date tour, performing his stand-up show The Giant Grapefruit, which concluded in March 2026 at Treorchy’s Park & Dare. The new show Wagging Rights is particularly special as it will feature Gilbert and his dog, Picsen, alongside five other celebrities and their pets. Among the talented lineup are fellow comedians Harriet Kemsley, Kae Kurd, Sara Pascoe, and TV personality Vicky Pattison.

The show is structured as a competitive series, where the contestants and their dogs will vie for the Wagging Rights trophy across six episodes. Each episode will focus on different skills, including obedience, scent work, agility, freestyle, and ball sports. A panel of the UK’s top dog show judges will evaluate the performances, adding a professional touch to the lighthearted competition.

The contextual background

Rhod Gilbert, who has been a prominent figure in British comedy, faced a challenging battle with a rare form of head and neck cancer in 2022. His diagnosis led to a rigorous treatment regimen that he completed in 2023. His experience was documented in a powerful Channel 4 program titled A Pain in the Neck, which highlighted the realities of his health struggles. The documentary resonated with many, providing insight into the emotional and physical challenges he endured.

In addition to his documentary work, Gilbert participated in the Great Celebrity Bake Off, where he raised funds for Stand Up to Cancer. His commitment to charitable causes is evident in the success of his two-year stand-up tour, which raised over £300,000 for the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff, where he received treatment. Gilbert’s efforts have entertained audiences and contributed significantly to cancer research and support.

Upon concluding his tour, Gilbert expressed the emotional weight of his experiences, saying, “It’s been an extraordinary two years. Taking this show on the road has been incredibly emotional, and I’ve been inspired by the people I’ve met in audiences up and down the country.” He emphasized the shared laughter and stories that connected him with his fans, making the tour a deeply personal endeavor.

What's next

With the launch of Wagging Rights, Gilbert is looking to shift gears from his previous serious themes to a more lighthearted and entertaining format. He humorously stated, “Picsen and I are joining the wagging rights competition to show the world what a poorly trained dog and chaotic human can achieve. It’s what the world needs right now.” This playful approach reflects his desire to bring joy and laughter to audiences after a challenging period in his life.

The series is set to stream on the U platform, available through Channel 4, later in 2026. The anticipation surrounding Gilbert’s return suggests that audiences are eager to see him back in action, particularly in a format that allows for humor and fun. As he embarks on this new venture, fans can expect a blend of comedic talent and heartfelt moments, especially as Gilbert continues to share his life experiences through his work.

As Gilbert prepares for the premiere of Wagging Rights, he aims to engage with his audience in a fresh way, combining his comedic skills with the charm of his four-legged co-star. His return to television promises entertainment and a reminder of resilience and the power of humor in overcoming life's challenges.
