The Emmy-winning creator of Abbott Elementary partners with Fleischer Studios to bring the iconic character back to the big screen
Category: Arts & Culture
Quinta Brunson, the acclaimed creator of the hit series Abbott Elementary, is set to develop and star in a feature film adaptation of the iconic animated character Betty Boop, as reported by Variety. This marks a notable return for Betty Boop, who has not starred in a theatrical motion picture since the 1930s.
Brunson's company, Fifth Chance Productions, is collaborating with Mark Fleischer, the grandson of Betty Boop's creator, Max Fleischer, and Fleischer Studios on this project. The film, which is currently in development, will explore the origin and evolution of Betty Boop through the lens of her creator, examining the complex relationship between the artist and his creation as he navigates the creative and commercial pressures of establishing one of the world’s first animated icons.
“Betty Boop is one of our nation’s most beloved cartoon characters, yet somehow still remains pleasantly niche,” Brunson stated. “She has had a quiet but undeniable impact on culture for nearly a century. After Erin and I met with Mark and learned more about his grandfather’s creation of Betty, I realized there was a much more in-depth story to tell. One that could be explored in a way that feels refreshing, subversive, and timeless, much like Betty herself.”
Mark Fleischer echoed Brunson's sentiments, expressing his enthusiasm for the project. “When Quinta first approached me with the unique concept of a movie about the relationship of my grandfather, Max Fleischer, and his creation, Betty Boop, I was breath taken,” he said. He praised Brunson for embodying Betty’s characteristics, including her love of life, intelligence, humor, sassiness, and compassion.
This film comes at a time when there has been a resurgence of interest in reimagining classic characters through a contemporary lens. Similar to how Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie revitalized the character of Barbie, Brunson aims to breathe new life into Betty Boop, a character created in 1930 who has appeared in over 100 cartoons during her original run. Betty Boop evolved from a poodle-like nightclub singer into a fully human Jazz Age icon, becoming the first and only animated independent female movie superstar of her era.
Betty Boop's significance in American pop culture is underscored by her status as the first cartoon character profiled by A&E’s Biography and her recent role in the Broadway musical BOOP!. Her global licensing footprint spans fashion, beauty, collectibles, and contemporary brand collaborations, solidifying her place among the most successful licensed classic characters in entertainment history.
Brunson, who is currently enjoying the success of Abbott Elementary, made history by becoming the first solo Black woman to win the Emmy for outstanding writing for a comedy series and the first to earn three Emmy nominations in a single year across writing, acting, and producing categories. She later won the Emmy for outstanding lead comedy actress for Season 2, making her the first Black woman to earn that honor since 1981.
As the head of Fifth Chance Productions, Brunson aims to create character-driven television and film that focuses on diverse voices and universal storytelling. Her collaboration with Fleischer Studios is expected to leverage Betty Boop's rich history and cultural impact to create a film that resonates with both new audiences and long-time fans.
The film's development is still in its early stages, but there is already considerable excitement surrounding Brunson's vision for the project. The film will explore themes of creativity, the pressures of success, and the dynamic between an artist and their creation, offering a fresh narrative that could captivate audiences. The project is being overseen by Erin Wehrenberg, head of creative affairs at Fifth Chance Productions.
As the film progresses, it is unclear how Brunson translates Betty Boop’s legacy into a modern cinematic experience. With the current trend of revamping classic characters for contemporary audiences, there is potential for this film to entertain and provoke thoughtful discussions about the evolution of female representation in animation and film.
Brunson’s successful track record with Abbott Elementary suggests that she is well-equipped to tackle this ambitious project. As she continues to rise in the industry, her portrayal of Betty Boop could set a new standard for how animated characters are brought to life on the big screen. The film is expected to be a blend of nostalgia and innovation, appealing to both older generations familiar with Betty Boop and younger viewers discovering her for the first time.
With the project currently in development, fans of both Brunson and Betty Boop are eagerly awaiting more information about the film's release date and additional casting announcements. As this iconic character prepares for her return to the big screen, Brunson's approach could very well redefine the legacy of Betty Boop for a new generation.
