Patricia Heaton, the beloved star of *Everybody Loves Raymond*, revealed that a mortifying moment with her sons led her to quit drinking eight years ago. The 68-year-old actress recounted her experience during an interview with *Women’s World*, explaining that she had been struggling with alcohol as she faced an empty nest and career uncertainty just before the pandemic.
Heaton shared that her drinking had escalated during a period when she felt rudderless, with her family and work—two anchors in her life—no longer present. "The things that had always anchored me — my family and my work — were gone. I started thinking, 'What am I supposed to do today?'" she said. This sense of loss led her to consume more wine, turning casual drinking into a habit that made her uncomfortable.
Recalling her drinking patterns, Heaton said, "A glass of wine with cooking became wine with dinner, wine during cleanup, and wine watching *Wheel of Fortune* and *Jeopardy!*" She noted that one fateful evening, she realized she had nearly finished an entire bottle of wine by herself. This alarming realization prompted her to seek divine intervention.
In her moment of reflection, Heaton prayed, saying, "God, I think You want me to stop drinking. I would be willing to stop, but You have to make it happen because I can’t. I’m willing, but I’m unable." The very next day, during a family game night, she felt she received a clear answer to her prayer.
As she played board games with her sons and their friends, Heaton struggled to pronounce the word "tradition." After attempting the word three times, her youngest son pointed out her difficulty, saying, "That’s great, Mom. You can’t even speak." Heaton described the moment as mortifying, saying, "I was completely mortified." This experience solidified her decision to quit drinking.
Heaton humorously recalled her reaction to the incident, stating, "Well, thanks for answering that prayer in record time, God. You know how to make it happen." She took this embarrassing moment as a sign and decided to embrace sobriety. "The next morning I said, 'Okay, God. Message received,'" she remarked, affirming that she has been sober ever since.
Before her decision to quit drinking, Heaton had enjoyed a successful career, particularly known for her role as Debra Barone on *Everybody Loves Raymond*, which aired from September 1996 to May 2005. The show, which followed the comedic trials of a sports writer and his family, earned her two Emmy Awards and solidified her status as a household name.
After the show ended, Heaton faced challenges in both her personal and professional life. With her children growing up and leaving home, she found herself in a new phase of life that left her feeling unsettled. The pandemic only exacerbated these feelings, as many people experienced shifts in their routines and relationships.
Heaton's experience is not unique; many individuals struggle with alcohol during periods of change or uncertainty. Her story shows the value of recognizing when drinking becomes problematic and the courage it takes to seek help, whether through personal reflection or divine guidance.
Since quitting drinking, Heaton has not only embraced a sober lifestyle but has also turned her experience into a business venture. Together with her husband, David Hunt, she launched a line of non-alcoholic wines called Solubrae. Made in California, Solubrae aims to provide those who miss the social aspects of drinking with an enjoyable alternative. Heaton noted that she found existing non-alcoholic wines lacking, which inspired her to create her own.
Solubrae currently offers two products: a white wine called Daylight and a rosé named Sundown. Heaton expressed her desire to create a product that could be enjoyed without the effects of alcohol, allowing people to partake in the ritual of sharing a drink during meals or celebrations.
Heaton's story resonates with many who have faced similar struggles with alcohol. As she continues to share her experience, she hopes to inspire others to seek help and acknowledge their own challenges. Her commitment to sobriety reflects personal growth and serves as a reminder of the power of faith and the importance of listening to one's inner voice.
Looking ahead, Heaton remains focused on her sobriety and her new business venture, which she believes will help others enjoy social occasions without alcohol. She continues to advocate for a healthy lifestyle, emphasizing that her life has improved significantly since she made the decision to stop drinking.
Patricia Heaton’s story serves as an encouraging reminder that change is possible, and sometimes, it takes an unexpected moment to spark that change. As she said, "I was so mortified, completely mortified," but that moment led her to a fulfilling life without alcohol, filled with purpose and joy.
