HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Matt Fitzpatrick has once again made headlines at the RBC Heritage, leading the prestigious tournament after a stellar second round where he shot a bogey-free 8-under 63. This impressive performance puts him at 14-under 128, giving him a one-shot lead going into the weekend at Harbour Town Golf Links.
Fitzpatrick, who previously won the RBC Heritage in 2023, demonstrated his prowess on the course with a series of remarkable birdies, including three consecutive holes on each nine. A highlight of his round came at the par-3 14th hole, where an errant 8-iron struck a tree but fortuitously bounced back onto the green. Fitzpatrick capitalized on this stroke of luck by sinking a remarkable 33-foot putt for a birdie. "You need those in golf," he said. "It's not always going to go your way for 72 holes. Nice to get the break and then nice to take advantage of it."
As the fourth Signature Event of the PGA TOUR season, the RBC Heritage has attracted a competitive field, but Fitzpatrick’s performance has set him apart. Viktor Hovland trails closely behind at 13-under par after a solid second-round score of 6-under 65. Meanwhile, Harris English sits in solo third at 10-under, with Sepp Straka, Ludvig Åberg, and Patrick Cantlay tied for fourth at 9-under.
This year’s RBC Heritage holds special significance for Fitzpatrick, not just for the competition but also due to his family's long-standing connection to Hilton Head Island. Fitzpatrick shared that his family vacationed in the area when he was a child, making it a nostalgic return to a place filled with cherished memories. "I think we came three or four times beginning when I was nine or ten years old," he recalled. "I played the golf course twice with my father, but we spent more time enjoying the area. My dad Googled tennis, golf, and good weather, and Hilton Head was a great spot for us. Florida was a fortune at that time."
Fitzpatrick’s father, Russ, noted that their vacations often revolved around the annual PGA TOUR stop at Harbour Town. "I have great memories from those trips," Matt added. He fondly remembered getting a golf ball from Boo Weekley, a two-time champion of the RBC Heritage. The emotional ties to the location are even more poignant this year as Fitzpatrick’s wife announced that they are expecting their first child later in 2026, adding a layer of joy to his time at the tournament.
In terms of his game, Fitzpatrick has been working diligently to improve his putting, which had previously let him down at the Masters, where he finished T-18. Currently, he ranks third in the field for Strokes Gained: Putting after collaborating with his coach, Phil Kenyon. "I was frustrated and disappointed," he expressed about his earlier struggles. "We needed to really look into things and think about what's going to be different this week. It feels like it’s giving me a little bit more freedom, more than anything."
The RBC Heritage is a key event on the PGA TOUR, and Fitzpatrick’s performance so far has positioned him well for the weekend. Golf fans can catch the action on the Golf Channel and CBS, with coverage scheduled for April 18-19, 2026. The broadcast will feature a mix of live tournament coverage and special betting analysis through PGA TOUR LIVE on ESPN+.
As Fitzpatrick continues to lead the charge, he faces stiff competition from Hovland and English and from a host of other talented golfers. Scottie Scheffler, the world number one, is also in contention, having shot a bogey-free 67. When asked if he took pleasure in competing alongside Scheffler, Fitzpatrick chuckled, saying, "Not something I was thinking about."
Fitzpatrick’s current score of 14-under is impressive, but he is aware that past performances indicate he may need to aim higher to secure another victory. In 2023, he clinched the title with a 17-under score, a benchmark he believes will be necessary again to don the coveted tartan jacket.
As the tournament progresses, Fitzpatrick’s blend of skill, family history, and personal milestones makes his story particularly captivating. The RBC Heritage serves as a platform for his golfing excellence and as a backdrop for family memories and new beginnings. With the weekend ahead, fans are eager to see if Fitzpatrick can maintain his lead and secure another victory at a course that holds so much significance for him.
As the excitement builds, Fitzpatrick as he seeks to navigate the challenges of the next rounds and potentially add another title to his growing list of achievements.
