Hyundai Motor Company is gearing up for the launch of its next-generation Tucson, code-named NX5, expected to hit the market in the third quarter of 2026. This full model change comes five years after the last redesign, and it promises to shake up the compact SUV segment with a renewed focus on hybrid technology.
Recent spy shots and renderings of the NX5 reveal a stark departure from the current model (NX4), indicating a comprehensive overhaul in design and powertrain. The most notable change is the elimination of the diesel lineup, a move that marks the end of an era for the Tucson, which has featured diesel engines since its inception in 2004.
Instead, the NX5 will primarily utilize a 1.6-liter turbo hybrid engine, complemented by a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) option. This shift aligns with the growing trend toward electrification in the automotive industry. Hyundai's next-generation hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) system will reportedly deliver a maximum torque of 380Nm and improve fuel efficiency by more than 4%, aiming for a combined mileage of approximately 18 to 19 km/L.
The PHEV variant is expected to offer an electric driving range of 100 kilometers on a single charge, with an optional electric all-wheel-drive (e-AWD) system. In a first for the Tucson, a high-performance N version is also anticipated, featuring a hybrid system that could produce over 300 horsepower.

This drop comes as part of a broader trend affecting internal combustion engine models, which have seen a 12.4% decrease in sales due to rising fuel prices.
In the first quarter of 2026, the cumulative sales of domestic SUVs in South Korea reached 162,429 units, a slight decline of 0.5% compared to the same period last year. Interestingly, sales of pure electric vehicles surged, doubling to 34,689 units, highlighting a growing consumer preference for electrified options.
Among the competitors, the Kia Sorento maintained its position as the best-selling domestic SUV, with 26,951 units sold, marking a 1.0% increase year-on-year. This success is attributed to the Sorento's hybrid models, which saw a 12.1% rise in sales, offsetting declines in internal combustion variants.
Meanwhile, the Kia Sportage faced a more challenging quarter, with sales dropping by 22.2% to 15,355 units. The new Kia EV5, which debuted last September, also made its mark by selling 6,884 units in its first quarter, with March sales surpassing 3,000 units for the first time.
As Hyundai navigates this transition, the impact of the NX5's pricing strategy will be closely watched. The new model is expected to be priced about 5 million won higher than its predecessor, raising questions about consumer response.
