Mnet's hip-hop survival program, Show Me the Money 12, has experienced a slight rebound following its recent music mission, yet it has not achieved the anticipated success. The show, which has only two episodes remaining before crowning its champion, faces a challenging environment with low viewership ratings and mixed chart performances.

Fans of Show Me the Money 12 had high hopes when the music mission began, with many proclaiming, "Things will be different once the music mission starts." This prediction proved partially accurate. Released on March 6, the mission track 'TICK TOCK' by ZICO and Crush reached a peak position of fifth on the Melon TOP100 chart, third on Spotify's Korean daily chart, and seventh on YouTube's Korean daily chart. Following this, on March 20, 'KISS KISS KISS' by NOWIMYOUNG and Royal 44 topped the Apple Music Korean daily chart and also secured third place on Spotify's daily chart, contributing to a notable presence of ten released tracks from the main competition on the Melon HOT100 chart.

Nevertheless, declaring Show Me the Money 12 a success remains ambiguous. The show's ratings have seen only a minimal increase, with the most recent episode airing on February 19 achieving a historic low of 0.4%. This lackluster performance is particularly concerning, especially for a series that previously enjoyed higher viewership.

Critics attribute the show's struggles to its outdated format, which has failed to keep pace with current trends. An executive from a hip-hop label expressed frustration, stating, "Even though the challenges like acapella rap and dis battles have become synonymous with Show Me the Money, continuing to rely on these same tactics feels stale and predictable at this point." The executive pointed out that this season marks the show's return after a three-year hiatus following the disappointing performance of the previous season, questioning why the production team has chosen to repeat past mistakes.

Meanwhile, the show has attracted a younger audience, particularly teenagers, who have shown enthusiasm for the competition. On March 23, tracks from Show Me the Money 12 made a considerable impact on the Genie Music teenage chart, with four songs entering the top ten and twelve songs making the top one hundred. The top song, 'KISS KISS KISS' featuring Sunwoo from the boy group THE BOYZ, showcased stylish and captivating rapping, enhancing the performance's appeal.

Coming second was 'TICK TOCK,' a collaboration featuring ZICO, which has gained attention for its catchy beat and for its viral success on short-form content platforms. Another track, 'SKY PASS' featuring BOBBY, secured the sixth position, demonstrating the show's ability to produce engaging music that resonates with its audience.

Yet, even with the successful entries on the charts, the series struggles to maintain viewership. With a current rating that has not surpassed 1%, the show faces tough competition from established acts like BTS, making it exceedingly difficult to secure a number one spot on the charts.

Critics have highlighted that many viewers find the editing and judging criteria outdated, especially considering the evolution of hip-hop, which now embraces the use of autotune and various effects. The current judging methods seem disconnected from contemporary hip-hop trends, leading to calls for a reform that focuses more on the artistry of rap and the narratives of the contestants.

With the semi-finals and finals still to come, scheduled for March 26 at 9:20 PM, there is hope that the remaining episodes will spotlight the talents of the competitors more effectively. The executive noted, "The fact that there’s a resurgence of interest among hip-hop fans is promising, but the show needs to adapt to remain relevant. If Show Me the Money intends to continue, it should focus on the music and the rappers rather than sensationalism and provocative themes."

Amidst the challenges, the show has introduced many new rappers to the scene, which has been a positive development. The executive expressed optimism, stating, "It would be great if this season could produce a hit track similar to past successes like 'Red Sun' or 'Day Day,' igniting a renewed interest and appreciation for hip-hop music." The upcoming episodes may prove to be a turning point, not just for the series but for the hip-hop genre itself.

With the final rounds approaching, fans and critics alike are eager to see how Show Me the Money 12 will conclude its season. The stakes are high, and the pressure is on to deliver a finale that crowns a champion and revitalizes the show's standing within the competitive music scene.
