HBO is basking in the glow of success as the Season 3 premiere of Euphoria attracted 8.5 million viewers across HBO and HBO Max within its first three days. This impressive figure marks a 44% increase over the Season 2 premiere, which aired in January 2022, indicating that the four-year hiatus did little to quell the series' fervor among fans.

The new season, which debuted on Sunday night, picks up five years after the dramatic events of the Season 2 finale. Fans were thrilled to see the return of beloved characters portrayed by stars like Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, and others. This time around, Rue, played by Zendaya, has taken on a darker role as a drug mule for Laurie, played by Martha Kelly. Meanwhile, Nate, portrayed by Elordi, has inherited his father's construction business and is preparing to marry Cassie, played by Sweeney, who is launching an OnlyFans account.

In addition to the returning cast, the new season introduces several new faces, including Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Darrell Britt-Gibson, Sharon Stone, and Marshawn Lynch. The premiere episode also paid homage to late series stars Angus Cloud, who died of a drug overdose in 2023, and Eric Dane, who passed away from complications of ALS in early 2026. Executive producer Kevin Turen also received a tribute after his death from a cardiac emergency in November 2023.

Notably, the premiere episode featured a particularly shocking montage involving Rue and Faye, played by Chloe Cherry. In an interview, Cherry revealed that the scene was intentionally crafted to be as "disgusting," "hard," and "horrible" as possible, as directed by showrunner Sam Levinson. The montage depicts Rue smuggling fentanyl into the United States from Mexico by swallowing lubed-up balloons filled with the drug, a process that is shown in graphic detail.

Cherry, who transitioned from adult films to mainstream acting with her role in Euphoria, described the experience of filming the scene as both challenging and rewarding. She recalled how she and Zendaya were genuinely swallowing balloons or condoms filled with powder, covered in K-Y Jelly. "It is disgusting to swallow bags, balloons filled with fentanyl, even if the fentanyl is fake because we’re on a set. It is very gross," Cherry shared with Decider.

The scene escalates as Rue and Faye struggle to force down the bundles, leading to a lengthy montage that includes moments of gagging and nearly vomiting. The graphic depiction does not shy away from showing the eventual expulsion of the drugs, which includes an accident involving Faye's hot pants and a dog licking the mess. Cherry noted that Levinson insisted on capturing the true horror of the act, emphasizing, "He was like: ‘I really, really, really need to see in the scene that it is absolutely disgusting to swallow these fentanyl balloons. Like, I need it to be just awful.'"

Yet, even in the face of such grotesque moments, Cherry expressed her love for performing. "I had an amazing time filming that scene because my greatest joy in this lifetime is performing… Anything!" she said. After completing the scene, the cast and crew applauded her efforts, creating a moment of camaraderie and support.

The premiere of Euphoria comes on the heels of the finale of the critically acclaimed limited series DTF St. Louis, which also performed well, drawing 3.5 million cross-platform viewers in its first three days. This show has seen consistent growth, with its finale finishing 40% above the premiere and averaging 6.5 million viewers per episode.

As Euphoria examines into the lives of its characters five years later, the narrative reflects the complex realities of addiction, relationships, and personal growth. The show has been praised for its raw and unflinching portrayal of these themes, echoing deeply with its audience.

In a world where the lines between entertainment and reality often blur, Euphoria continues to challenge its viewers, pushing boundaries and sparking conversations about the issues facing today's youth. With its combination of returning favorites and fresh faces, the series seems well-positioned to maintain its momentum.

As fans eagerly anticipate what lies ahead for Rue, Nate, and the rest of the ensemble, the success of the premiere suggests that the show’s impact is far from over. HBO’s commitment to storytelling that resonates with audiences is evident in the viewership numbers and the conversations ignited by the show.

With the series now in full swing, viewers can expect more shocking moments and emotional depth as the story continues to evolve. The first episode of Season 3 has set a high bar, and it how the characters will navigate their complex lives in the episodes to come.
