The Dong-gu District Office in Daegu has announced the opening of a photo zone featuring the popular local character, Donggureureu, at the Lotte Cinema Daegu Yulha Branch. The photo zone will be operational from May 1 to August 31, 2026, and is set to be located in the central area of the cinema's fourth floor.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to engage families and children in the community, providing a playful and interactive environment where visitors can take photos with the character. The design of the photo zone captures Donggureureu's cute and friendly image, making it an inviting space for families to enjoy.

According to the Dong-gu District Office, the photo zone is a fun attraction and serves as a unique marketing tool. The office plans to incorporate various social media events to encourage visitor participation. By sharing photos taken at the zone on social media platforms, visitors can help promote the Donggureureu character and, by extension, the local district.

The contextual backdrop

The establishment of the Donggureureu photo zone reflects the growing trend among local governments in South Korea to leverage cultural icons and characters for community engagement. As cities increasingly recognize the importance of local culture in fostering community identity and tourism, initiatives like this photo zone serve as effective tools to create a connection between residents and their local government.

Kim Tae-woon, the acting head of the Dong-gu District Office, emphasized the collaborative nature of this project, stating that it is a partnership with private cultural facilities aimed at helping residents become more familiar with the district's character. This collaboration is indicative of a larger movement within South Korea's municipal governance, where public-private partnerships are being utilized to enrich community experiences.

In addition to its role in promoting the character, the photo zone is expected to serve as a venue for various events throughout the summer. The Dong-gu District Office is planning to implement a series of events linked to the photo zone, including a verification event for visitors who take photos and share them on social media.

What's next

As the photo zone prepares to welcome guests starting May 1, the Dong-gu District Office is also gearing up for a series of promotional activities. Visitors will have the opportunity to participate in a social media hashtag campaign, where they can post their photos from the zone along with designated hashtags. Those who join in will receive small souvenirs as a token of appreciation, incentivizing more families to engage with the initiative.

The district office has also announced plans to strengthen safety management and on-site guidance, ensuring a pleasant experience for all visitors. This proactive approach highlights the office's commitment to promoting local culture and ensuring the safety and enjoyment of families visiting the cinema.

In the long term, the photographs collected during this event will be utilized to create various promotional materials for the Dong-gu District Office, enhancing the visibility of the district's initiatives and culture. Kim Tae-woon stated, “Through collaboration with private cultural facilities, we have been able to introduce the district’s character to more residents in a friendly manner,” adding that the district will continue to showcase diverse content featuring Donggureureu.

With the photo zone set to open in just a few days, excitement is building among local families and visitors. This initiative aims to entertain and seeks to forge a stronger connection between the community and its local government through engaging and interactive experiences.
