Dae-gu, South Korea, is ramping up its infection response capabilities as it prepares to host the 2026 World Masters Athletics Championships from August 22 to September 3. On May 7, a joint practical meeting was held at Dae-gu Stadium, involving six key organizations including the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) and the local health authorities.
This meeting aimed to clarify the roles of each organization and establish a cooperative response system to potential infectious disease situations during the event. The championships, designated as a national important event, will follow the KDCA's standard operating procedures for infectious disease preparedness and response at large gatherings.
According to city officials, preparations are focused on three main areas: personnel training, facility management, and resource management. Lee Jae-hong, Director of the Dae-gu Health and Welfare Bureau, emphasized the importance of thorough preparations to create a safe and healthy environment for the international participants. "As this is an international event where participants from around the world will gather, we will do our utmost to prepare diligently during the remaining time," Lee said.
The 2026 World Masters Athletics Championships is set to attract over 11,000 athletes and their families from more than 90 countries, making it a global festival for individuals aged 35 and older. This event promotes sports and serves as a platform to showcase Dae-gu to a worldwide audience.
