The 130th Boston Marathon, scheduled for April 20, 2026, is generating excitement as elite runners prepare to compete in one of the world’s most prestigious marathons. Defending champions John Korir and Sharon Lokedi will be aiming to retain their titles against a deep and talented field of competitors.
Korir, who won the 2025 Boston Marathon with a remarkable time of 2:04:45, returns to the starting line as a favorite. His performance last year marked the fastest winning time in over a decade. Since then, he has continued to impress, setting a personal best of 2:02:24 at the Valencia Marathon in December 2025. With three consecutive marathon victories under his belt, Korir is in peak form.
“Boston holds a special place in my heart, as I won my first major there in 2021 and have finished third twice,” Korir said. “I look forward to starting my 2026 season and racing a fast group of men in April.”
Challenging Korir will be Benson Kipruto, the 2021 Boston champion and a winner of multiple World Marathon Majors, including the Tokyo and New York marathons. Kipruto is the fastest man in the field with a personal best of 2:02:16, achieved in Tokyo. His experience and versatility make him a formidable opponent.
Other notable contenders include Alphonce Simbu, who finished just 19 seconds behind Korir in Boston last year and went on to win the marathon at the World Championships in Tokyo. Cybrian Kotut, another strong competitor, has a personal best of 2:03:22, and Abdi Nageeye, a two-time Olympian, is looking to improve upon his previous performances in Boston.
Meanwhile, the American contingent will feature veterans like Clayton Young and Galen Rupp, alongside younger talents such as Alex Maier and Joe Klecker. Rupp, a two-time Olympic medalist, will be aiming for a strong finish as he returns to Boston.
In the women’s race, Lokedi is a clear favorite after her stunning course record of 2:17:22 in 2025. She has had a successful year, winning both the Boston and New York marathons. “I’m excited to defend my title and see what I can achieve this year,” Lokedi commented.
Lokedi will face tough competition from Irine Cheptai, who took fourth place in Boston last year and has a personal best of 2:17:51, and Workenesh Edesa, who clocked under 2:18 in the 2025 Hamburg Marathon. The depth of the women’s field is remarkable, with American record holder Emily Sisson making her Boston debut, alongside 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials winner Fiona O’Keeffe and 2025 Boston top U.S. finisher Jess McClain.
“This could be one of the deepest women’s pro fields we’ve seen assembled for the Boston Marathon,” said Ashley Tysiac, Editor of Content Hype at Hearst’s Enthusiast & Wellness Group. “Expect an entertaining battle to play out on race day.”
As the runners prepare for the challenging course, which includes the notorious Heartbreak Hill, weather conditions will also play a key role in the race outcome. Boston in April can be unpredictable, with temperatures varying greatly and winds impacting runners’ performances.
With the stage set for a thrilling race, the Boston Marathon continues to uphold its legacy as a premier event in the marathon calendar. As Korir and Lokedi prepare to defend their titles, the eyes of the world to see who emerges victorious in 2026.
